Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to the party while clarifying his involvement with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, which is being positioned as a political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the clarification during a campaign rally held to flag off the Labour Party’s governorship campaign in Anambra State. Addressing concerns about his dual association, the former Anambra State governor emphasized that although he is part of a broader opposition coalition, he remains a card-carrying member of the Labour Party.
“I want to clear the air on the confusion some people are spreading. Let me state this clearly: I and the National Assembly members of the Labour Party are part of a coalition that has adopted the ADC platform for the 2027 elections. Other opposition parties are also expected to join us,” Obi said.
He added, “But as of today, we are members of the Labour Party. If anyone asks you what party Peter Obi belongs to, tell them Peter Obi is in the Labour Party. If they ask about the coalition, tell them yes—it is for 2027.”
Obi also confirmed his intention to contest the presidency again in the next general election, stating that he remains the most qualified candidate.
“Anyone can run for president—I won’t stop them. But let it be known that I am in the race, and no one does it better than me,” he declared.
The rally also served as the launchpad for the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Anambra, Dr. George Moghalu. Obi praised Moghalu as a competent and focused leader, describing him as “soft-spoken, focused, and an achiever.”
“He is a highly marketable candidate. With him as our flagbearer, Anambra can look forward to people-focused leadership and good governance,” Obi added.
