FG Declares Tuesday, July 15 a Public Holiday to Honour Late President Muhammadu Buhari

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away recently.

The announcement was made on Monday, July 14, by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. This declaration follows the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

According to the minister, the holiday is intended as a mark of respect for Buhari’s lifelong service to Nigeria and his notable contributions to the nation’s democratic development, governance, and national unity.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the Minister said.

Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to honour the former president’s memory by embracing peace, patriotism, and national cohesion, ideals which he noted were central to Buhari’s vision for a stronger and more united Nigeria.

In line with the mourning period, the government had earlier directed that national flags be flown at half-mast for seven days, beginning Sunday, July 13, 2025.

The public holiday serves as a moment for the nation to pay tribute to the late leader’s legacy and reflect on his years of public service, from military leadership to democratic governance.
