There was widespread panic early Thursday morning as a train mishap occurred along the busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, halting movement and causing traffic disruptions. A rear compartment of a moving train reportedly detached from the main body at the Ladipo axis, sparking confusion and fear among passengers and residents in the vicinity.
According to reports by GistTide, the incident took place around 8:00 a.m., severely affecting vehicular traffic and leaving many commuters stranded.
The affected train was traveling from Ogba Ayo in Ogun State to Apapa in Lagos when the unexpected detachment occurred. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with passengers left startled and unsure of what had happened.
“All the passengers were taken aback, but thankfully, no lives were lost,”
said Oloruntoba Omodele, an eyewitness who spoke to journalists at the scene.
The Ladipo corridor, already infamous for its constant gridlocks and traffic mishaps, witnessed yet another alarming episode as the detached train coach blocked a portion of the rail line for over 30 minutes. Emergency responders arrived promptly to manage the situation and ease the traffic congestion that followed.
Although no injuries or fatalities were recorded, the sudden malfunction raised concerns about the safety and maintenance protocols of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
As of the time of this report, NRC has not issued an official statement regarding the cause of the detachment or whether an investigation has been initiated.
The incident underscores growing calls for improved safety measures across Nigeria’s rail infrastructure, particularly on routes such as the Lagos-Abeokuta line, which serves thousands of daily commuters.
