Lagos State and Oyo State Governments have declared Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a public holiday in commemoration of Isese Day, a celebration of Yoruba culture, traditions, and spirituality.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos approved the holiday to enable traditional worshippers and residents to participate fully in the cultural observance dedicated to preserving indigenous heritage.
The announcement, contained in a circular issued by the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, on August 18, 2025, emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting Yoruba cultural values.
“Mr. Governor has approved that Wednesday, 20th August 2025, be declared a work-free day for public servants in the state,” the notice read. “Consequently, work resumes on Thursday, 21st August 2025, at 8:00 a.m.”
The circular further directed all accounting officers to ensure the information was widely disseminated across ministries, departments, and agencies.
Similarly, the Oyo State Government announced a work-free day through a circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo, on Monday in Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde, who approved the declaration, urged residents to take advantage of the occasion to reflect and pray for peace, unity, and stability in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
Isese Day, observed annually on August 20, is one of the most significant cultural and spiritual festivals among the Yoruba people. It honours the traditional religion, ancestors, and deities while promoting cultural pride and indigenous knowledge.
Both Lagos and Oyo States have continued to champion the recognition of Isese Day as a way of fostering inclusivity for traditional worshippers and strengthening Yoruba cultural identity.
