After nearly three decades of marriage, Tomeka Thiam, wife of globally renowned music star Akon, has filed for divorce.
According to recent court filings, Tomeka revealed that she and Akon were legally married in September 1996. However, she is now ending the union, citing irreconcilable differences.
The documents further disclosed that the estranged couple shares a 17-year-old child. Tomeka is asking the court to grant her joint legal custody of their child while requesting physical custody. In addition, she is seeking spousal support but has also asked the court to block Akon from receiving any support from her.
Over the years, Akon has been notably vague about his marital status and the number of “wives” he has, but Tomeka’s filing makes her position clear.
As of now, Akon has not publicly commented on the divorce proceedings.
This development marks a major shift in the personal life of the Senegalese-American superstar, who has often made headlines for his polygamy-related statements and lifestyle.
