The Federal Government has directed the immediate shutdown of 47 Unity Colleges across Nigeria following the latest wave of violent attacks on schools in Kebbi and Niger states. The directive comes amid growing national concern over the safety of students and teachers, especially in regions targeted by armed groups.
According to the Ministry of Education, the closure was approved after gunmen invaded multiple schools, abducting students and staff members, and killing at least one education official.
In a circular issued to principals on Friday, November 21, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education, said the measure was authorised by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, as a precautionary response to escalating security risks.
“Sequel to the recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches, the Minister of Education has approved the immediate closure of the listed Federal Unity Colleges with immediate effect,” the circular read.
The affected schools include Unity Colleges located in Zaria, Daura, Sokoto, Potiskum, Ikare-Akoko, Abaji, and other areas classified as vulnerable by security agencies.
Fresh Attacks Heighten Fears Nationwide
The government’s decision follows the violent raid on Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State. During the attack, gunmen murdered Vice Principal Malam Hassan Makaku, who reportedly attempted to protect the students. The attackers subsequently abducted 25 schoolgirls, sparking widespread outrage and fear.
Simultaneously, Niger State also recorded fresh attacks on educational institutions, adding to the already tense atmosphere across the northern region.

A recent report covering 2014 to 2022 revealed that over 1,680 children have been abducted from schools across Nigeria. This alarming statistic underscores the increasing danger facing students and highlights the urgent need for stronger security measures in and around educational facilities.
The mass closure of Unity Colleges marks one of the most drastic steps taken by the Federal Government in recent years to safeguard students amid worsening insecurity.
