Political activist and former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has issued a strong warning that Nigeria could plunge into Nepal-like unrest if the 2027 general elections are not credible.
Speaking in Abuja, Frank stressed the urgent need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to implement far-reaching reforms ahead of the polls to guarantee free, fair, and transparent elections.
According to him, without credible elections and ethical leadership from both electoral and security institutions, Nigeria risks a repeat of the #EndSARS-style protests of 2020, which spiraled into nationwide unrest.
Frank also appealed to the international community, particularly U.S. President Donald Trump and other global leaders, to mount pressure on the Nigerian government, INEC, and the National Assembly to prioritize electoral reforms. He argued that without such reforms, a free and fair 2027 election would be impossible.
With the tenure of INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu nearing its end, Frank demanded the appointment of a new chairman with proven integrity.
He declared:
“Let the US impose stiffer sanctions on judges, justices and INEC officials that may compromise the electoral process because we believe and support Donald Trump’s position on enthroning true democracy across Africa. Security agencies must be unbiased and stop their usual role in rigging elections for the ruling party. They must protect voters and prevent political violence. Failure to do so risks pushing Nigeria into a situation worse than Nepal’s recent unrest, given our challenges with poverty and tyranny.”
Frank’s remarks underscore rising concerns about Nigeria’s democratic stability and the growing calls for electoral accountability as the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins.
