Residents of Makurdi, Benue State, have apprehended two suspected Point of Sale (POS) fraudsters accused of defrauding operators with fake bank alerts.
The first incident happened on Monday, September 29, 2025, at Gyado Villa, opposite Peniel College. According to eyewitnesses, the suspect allegedly attempted to trick a POS operator by generating a fraudulent transaction alert. Fortunately, vigilant residents noticed the scheme, intercepted the suspect, and immediately handed him over to the police for investigation.
In a related development, another suspected POS fraudster was caught over the weekend in Makurdi. Social media personality Zege Okwande revealed that the individual had been operating a scam ring, defrauding several POS agents with fake transactions, before he was eventually apprehended.
Both suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have advised POS operators and the general public to remain vigilant and verify all transactions before releasing cash.
A resident who witnessed the incident stated: “We noticed something suspicious during the transaction, and when the alert came in, it didn’t match the usual bank confirmation. That was when we realized it was fake.”
The increasing cases of POS fraud across Nigeria have raised concerns about the security of cash transactions. Experts continue to urge operators to adopt safer practices, including the use of transaction verification tools and proper record-keeping.
