UNN Bans Social Activities on Campus Beyond 6 PM After Student Event Turns Violent

Posted on September 15, 2025 By Clare Aririahu No Comments on UNN Bans Social Activities on Campus Beyond 6 PM After Student Event Turns Violent

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has announced a ban on all social activities on campus extending beyond 6 pm.

This decision was disclosed in a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Inya Egwu, following a tragic incident that occurred on September 12, 2025.

According to reports, a businessman identified as Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, was stabbed to de@th while attending a bonfire night organized by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies’ student association.

The university management, while addressing the situation, explained that the bonfire event was hijacked by miscreants from a neighbouring community, who instigated violence that resulted in the fatality.

In the official statement, UNN announced strict measures to prevent future occurrences:

“Henceforth, the UNN management has directed that all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit. Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m. henceforth,” the statement read.

UNN management further assured the university community and the general public of its commitment to safety and security. It emphasized that proactive steps will continue to be taken to safeguard lives and property within the institution.

This new directive marks a significant shift in the university’s social policy, aimed at balancing students’ recreational needs with the overriding concern for safety on campus.
