US Slashes Nigerian Visa Validity to Three Months, Single Entry

Posted on July 9, 2025 By Clare Aririahu 2 Comments on US Slashes Nigerian Visa Validity to Three Months, Single Entry

The United States government has announced a significant change to its visa policy for Nigerian citizens, reducing the validity period of most non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas to three months. The new measure also limits these visas to a single entry.

The policy shift, which took immediate effect on Tuesday, was confirmed in a press release from the US Embassy in Abuja.

According to the statement, visas issued before July 8, 2025, will remain valid under their existing terms. However, all newly issued qualifying visas from that date will adhere to the revised guidelines.

The embassy explained that this adjustment is part of a broader global visa reciprocity initiative by the US Department of State. This process, it noted, is ongoing and subject to periodic revisions, which may include changes to the number of entries allowed and the length of visa validity.

In the release, the US government said the move is intended to uphold the security and integrity of its immigration systems. It emphasized that American visa regulations are built around international technical and security standards.

To this end, the US Mission stated that it is collaborating with Nigerian authorities to help the country meet these benchmarks. Some of the areas of focus include the issuance of secure travel documents, management of visa overstays, and improved information sharing on criminal and security matters.

Despite the tighter restrictions, the embassy reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong diplomatic ties with Nigeria.

“The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity,” the statement said.

It also acknowledged Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to improve its immigration and border security practices, commending reforms by relevant Nigerian agencies.

The embassy urged Nigerian travelers to comply fully with visa conditions and to ensure that all travel documents are authentic and up to date.

Concluding the statement, the US Mission expressed optimism about continued collaboration with the Nigerian government and its citizens in promoting legal travel, educational exchange, and business partnerships between both nations.
