Sophie Grégoire has opened up about navigating her life in the spotlight as the former wife of ex-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, especially as his new relationship with global pop star Katy Perry continues to make headlines.
During her appearance on the podcast “Arlene is Alone,” hosted by Arlene Dickinson, the conversation shifted to the intense media attention surrounding Trudeau and the chart-topping singer. Dickinson praised Grégoire for remaining “cool” despite the public buzz.
Acknowledging the emotional impact, Grégoire responded with honesty: “You know, we’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal,” she said. “How you react to stuff is your decision. So, I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.”
Grégoire and Trudeau publicly announced their separation in August 2023 after 18 years of marriage. The former couple shares three children—Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien. Trudeau and Perry confirmed their relationship when they were spotted holding hands in Paris during the singer’s birthday celebrations in October, following months of speculation.
A strong mental health advocate, Grégoire emphasized the importance of taking charge of her emotional responses. “I’m very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers,” she noted. “What I do with it is my decision. The woman I want to become through this is my decision.”
She clarified that choosing peace does not mean suppressing her emotions. Instead, she allows herself the freedom to feel everything fully.
“I’ll let myself be disappointed by someone, I’ll let myself be angry, be sad,” she explained. “And I know for a fact how important it is, as a mental health advocate, to feel those emotions.”
Earlier in the conversation, Grégoire also corrected the podcast host when referred to as a “single mom.”
“I’m definitely not a single mom,” she stated firmly. “I have a partnership with a father who has such deep love and availability to his children.”
Her candid conversation gives the public an intimate look into how she is navigating co-parenting, emotional boundaries, and personal growth amid heightened global attention.
