The release of pre-wedding photos of a couple from Benue State has triggered widespread conversation on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the apparent age difference between the bride and groom.
The couple, identified as Michael and Angel, are scheduled to tie the knot on December 13, 2025, in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. However, shortly after their photos surfaced online, users began debating whether the bride-to-be is underage, with some alleging she appears too young while others insisted she simply has a youthful appearance.
Benue activist Zeke Orkwande, who hails from the same community, brought further attention to the issue after sharing the photos on Facebook on Monday. In his post, he appealed to residents to help confirm the girl’s true age.
He wrote:
“Good morning my people, I hope this isn’t a case of underaged marriage about to happen in Ikyurav-ya, Kwande Local Government Area? Somebody help check.”
Orkwande referenced a recent case in Enugu where a man and parents of a 13-year-old girl were arrested for an underage marriage arrangement. According to him:
“Recently, in Enugu state, police arrested a 30yrs old man for marrying a 13yrs old girl. Both parents were arrested too.”
Despite raising the alarm, the activist cautioned the public against making hasty conclusions, noting that appearances can sometimes be misleading.
He added:
“Well, let’s not conclude yet, some people are born with ever young blood and baby faces. Maybe Angel isn’t underage as we see in photos. Let’s not judge the book by its cover yet. CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM.”
The photos have continued to attract mixed reactions across social platforms, with many calling for proper verification to prevent potential child marriage, while others argue that the bride may indeed be of legal age.
Authorities and community leaders have not yet issued an official statement regarding the couple’s ages or the legality of the upcoming marriage.
