The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly rejected claims that it is plotting to destabilize Nigeria’s democracy, insisting that any change in government will come through the ballot box, not by force.
Responding to allegations made by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, who suggested that opposition parties were conspiring to oust President Bola Tinubu before the 2027 elections, the ADC labeled the remarks as “reckless” and “baseless.”
Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, stated that the ADC remains committed to democratic principles and will never engage in undemocratic activities.
“We condemn the tweet by President Tinubu’s aide, Onanuga, alleging that the opposition plans to overthrow the government before 2027,” Abdullahi said in a statement. “If anything, such inflammatory rhetoric appears designed to justify a crackdown on dissenting voices.”
According to Abdullahi, the ruling administration is attempting to create a false narrative in order to stifle legitimate political opposition.
“The ADC is not in the business of truncating democracy. We are committed to rescuing Nigeria from the failures of this government through peaceful, lawful means. We don’t have bullets; we only have the ballots,” he added. “When the time comes, we will present our vision and policies to the Nigerian people — and let them make their choice.”
The statement reflects growing tensions between opposition parties and the Tinubu-led government, as the political climate intensifies ahead of the 2027 general elections.
