ASUU Declares Indefinite Nationwide Strike Over Salary Delays

Posted on July 8, 2025 By Clare Aririahu No Comments on ASUU Declares Indefinite Nationwide Strike Over Salary Delays

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has launched an indefinite nationwide strike starting today, July 8, 2025, in protest over the Federal Government’s failure to pay university lecturers their June salaries.

The union announced the industrial action via its official platforms, citing the government’s continued breach of agreements and unmet commitments to academic staff across public universities.

Branches of ASUU nationwide, including those in Niger State, have fully complied with the strike directive. The union stated that the action aligns with its long-standing “No Pay, No Work” stance, aimed at pressing home its demands for accountability and respect for prior agreements.

ASUU National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, attributed the latest dispute to administrative hitches and technical issues on the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) platform, which reportedly caused disruptions in June salary disbursements.

Even before the official start of the strike, some universities—including the University of Jos and the University of Abuja—had already suspended academic activities in anticipation of the action.
