A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the Bronx, New York, after 1-year-old Imani Mitchell died from severe head injuries allegedly inflicted by her mother’s boyfriend, Jerome Thomas.
According to police and prosecutors, the incident occurred on August 28 inside the family’s apartment on Union Avenue near East 152nd Street in the Woodstock neighborhood. Thomas, 19, was caring for Imani when he allegedly “struck the child twice on the side of the head with a heavy hand,” causing the toddler to collapse in pain.
Doctors at Harlem Hospital discovered that Imani suffered extensive subdural hemorrhaging on the right side of her head, leading to severe brain swelling and intracranial pressure that resulted in brain herniation. To relieve the pressure, surgeons were forced to remove a portion of her skull.
Despite being placed on a ventilator and other life support measures, the toddler could not recover. She was pronounced dead on Friday, September 5, with the New York Police Department confirming her death as a homicide.
Suspect Held Without Bail
Thomas was arrested on August 29, initially facing charges of felony assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child. Following Imani’s death, prosecutors confirmed that charges could be upgraded to homicide, pending a grand jury indictment.
The suspect is currently being held without bail on Rikers Island and is scheduled to appear in court on September 18, according to the District Attorney’s office.
Neighbors Express Shock and Regret
Neighbors recalled seeing the couple and their daughter shortly after moving into the building.
“I spent a little time with the mother, and I guess the boyfriend one night, just because they were new to the area, and we were just showing them where some of the stores are and different things like that,” said Nicole LaCroix, a neighbor who remembered holding baby Imani. “She was playing with my phone – she was an active one-year-old.”
LaCroix’s daughter, however, reported hearing frequent arguments from the apartment.
“They fight every night. [I’ve heard] them argue every night since they moved here … ‘Fk you, bch.’ And ‘Get the f**k out,’” LaCroix said. “Several times she put his clothes out, but they’d be back together the same day. I wish I would have stepped in and helped.”
A Community in Mourning
The tragic death of Imani Mitchell has left the Bronx community devastated, with many expressing grief over the young life cut short and outrage over the alleged abuse. Authorities are continuing investigations as the case heads toward a grand jury hearing.
