Former Presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has strongly condemned the recent calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In a post shared on his social media account, Ahmad described such calls as a “grave betrayal” to the innocent Nigerians who have suffered as a result of IPOB’s violent activities.
According to him, “It is a grave betrayal to the innocent lives lost and the countless victims of IPOB’s brutality to call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu.”
Bashir Ahmad stressed that the nation must remember the families of those who lost their loved ones and the security operatives who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. He maintained that justice and accountability should take precedence over political sentiments or pressure from sympathizers.
Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in June 2021 and has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since then. His prolonged detention has sparked mixed reactions across Nigeria, with some groups demanding his freedom while others insist that his trial should continue due to the violence linked to IPOB’s agitation for Biafra.
Ahmad’s statement reignites the debate over how the federal government should handle separatist leaders and movements whose activities have led to instability and loss of lives, especially in the South-East region.
