UNIZIK bans sign-out celebrations

UNIZIK Bans Final-Year Students from Sign-Out Celebrations Over Security Concerns

Posted on August 20, 2025 By Clare Aririahu No Comments on UNIZIK Bans Final-Year Students from Sign-Out Celebrations Over Security Concerns

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK), has announced an indefinite ban on the popular “sign-out” celebrations by final-year students during examinations.

The decision, which takes immediate effect, was contained in a statement released on Tuesday by the institution’s Registrar, Dr. Chinenye Okeke.

According to the university, the ban was necessitated by the recurring cases of chaos, violence, and disruptions that often trail the celebrations.

“The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University wishes to inform all students that, with immediate effect, all forms of signing-off related to final examinations are banned on campus. This step was taken in response to recurring incidents of disorder and disruption associated with such events,” the statement partly read.

The school further expressed concerns about the influx of unauthorised individuals who usually join students during the celebrations, describing it as a serious security threat to both staff and students.

Dr. Okeke warned that any student caught engaging in the banned activity would face strict disciplinary measures, including possible rustication. She also noted that outsiders who attempt to participate in such events risk arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct.

Reassuring the campus community of its commitment to safety, the Registrar emphasized that UNIZIK will not tolerate any activity capable of undermining peace and order on campus.

“All students are advised to focus on their academic responsibilities and promptly report any threats to safety or misconduct to the appropriate authorities,” the statement added.

The development has sparked mixed reactions among students, with some expressing disappointment while others acknowledged the need for stricter measures to maintain security.
