The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has issued a stern warning to Christians about the dangers of materialism and overindulgence in bodily beautification, declaring that such pursuits are ultimately meaningless in the face of eternity.
Speaking during the 73rd Annual Convention of the RCCG, themed “The Overcomers”, held at the Redemption Camp in Mowe, Ogun State, the highly respected cleric called on believers to prioritize spiritual growth and discipline over the accumulation of wealth or obsession with physical appearance.
“If you are pursuing wealth at the expense of your soul, that would be stupidity,” Pastor Adeboye said.
“What happens when you die? How many of those things can you take with you?”
Prosperity Isn’t a Sin, But Priorities Matter
Pastor Adeboye clarified that God does not oppose prosperity, but warned that acquiring riches through unrighteous means or allowing wealth to become an idol contradicts Christian values.
“God does not hate enjoyment,” he emphasized.
“But the body you pamper, shine, and make up will perish one day. Take care of the spirit, for that is what will go to heaven. The body does not want you to be an overcomer.”
He reminded the congregation that the Christian journey demands discipline, sacrifice, and a firm stand against fleshly desires.
Discipline Is Key to Spiritual Victory
In a message laced with biblical truth and spiritual urgency, Pastor Adeboye spoke about the need for believers to remain vigilant and focused on their spiritual race. According to him, success in the spiritual realm is not just about winning battles but also maintaining one’s position as a spiritual champion.
“To become a champion requires discipline. Remaining a champion requires even more — because every challenger wants your crown,” he noted.
He urged Christians not to be discouraged by spiritual battles, assuring them of divine support.
“Life is war made up of battles. But rejoice, you are not alone. The Holy Spirit, the Almighty dwelling in you, is greater than your enemies.”
Man is Both Earth and Spirit
In a deeply reflective moment, Pastor Adeboye explained the dual nature of man, noting the constant tension between flesh and spirit.
“You are a dangerous composition — both earth and Spirit. The dust pulls us down, while the Spirit of God lifts us up,” he said.
“The overcomer’s life lies in choosing the Spirit.”
His message struck a chord with thousands of attendees at the convention, emphasizing that true victory lies in aligning with the Spirit of God and rejecting the carnal pulls of the world.
