US President Donald Trump has reportedly approved a bold new plan to provide Ukraine with intelligence support for precision strikes deep inside Russian territory, a move that signals a sharp escalation in Washington’s backing of Kyiv’s war efforts.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the agreement authorizes the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies to assist Kyiv in targeting Russian energy infrastructure, including oil refineries, fuel pipelines, and other facilities that generate crucial revenue for the Kremlin’s war machine.
US officials also revealed that the Trump administration has urged NATO allies in Europe to share similar intelligence to strengthen Ukraine’s strike capabilities.
A Major Shift in US Support for Ukraine
While Washington has consistently supported Ukraine’s drone and missile campaigns, this new intelligence-sharing arrangement marks the first time the Trump administration has directly backed Kyiv’s long-range strike operations against targets inside Russia.
In addition to intelligence support, the White House is weighing the possibility of supplying Ukraine with advanced long-range weaponry, including Tomahawk and Barracuda cruise missiles. These missiles can travel over 500 miles, with the Tomahawk capable of hitting targets up to 1,500 miles away—a range that would place Moscow and other key Russian cities within Ukraine’s reach.
Although a final decision has not been made, sources told The New York Post that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky personally requested Tomahawk missiles during a closed-door meeting with Trump last week. According to the sources, Trump “appeared amenable” to the idea.
Currently, Ukraine’s longest-range US-provided weapon is the ATACMS missile system, with a maximum range of 190 miles—far short of the capabilities Tomahawk missiles would bring.
Trump Labels Russia a “Paper Tiger”
This development comes as Trump has intensified his rhetoric against Russia. Just last week, he publicly referred to Russia as a “paper tiger,” citing fresh US intelligence reports that suggest the Kremlin is on the brink of economic collapse and potential battlefield defeat.
For the first time, Trump also stated his belief that the Ukrainian military could “win all of Ukraine back in its original form.”
The shift underscores the growing confidence within the Trump administration that Ukraine, with enhanced US and NATO support, could decisively alter the course of the war.
