Washington, D.C. — United States Senator Ted Cruz has unveiled plans to introduce new legislation targeting Nigerian officials responsible for implementing or enforcing Sharia and blasphemy laws. According to Cruz, these laws have contributed to the persecution of Christians and other religious minorities in Nigeria.
In a statement released on social media, the Texas senator expressed appreciation to former President Donald Trump for previously designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over religious freedom violations. He described the move as “a critical step in holding accountable and changing the behavior of Nigerian officials.”
“I am deeply gratified to President Trump for making this determination. I have fought for years to counter the slaughter and persecution of Christians in Nigeria, and this year introduced legislation that will lock in the designation made today,” Cruz stated.
Cruz explained that his forthcoming bill will include additional measures to address ongoing human rights abuses and religious persecution in Nigeria. The legislation will specifically target government officials who promote or enforce laws criminalizing blasphemy or imposing Sharia-based punishments.
“My legislation implements additional steps, including targeting those who implement blasphemy and Sharia laws in Nigeria, and I am committed to working with the administration and my colleagues to advance my bill and implement these necessary measures,” Cruz added.
The senator also praised President Trump’s leadership, describing his earlier decision as “a great one” and emphasizing its long-term importance in protecting religious minorities in Nigeria.
“President Trump’s decision was a great one, and I commend his strong leadership. This legislation will help lock in protections for Christians and other religious minorities facing persecution in Nigeria,” he said.
Cruz’s proposed bill is expected to add diplomatic and financial consequences for Nigerian officials involved in religious oppression, reinforcing the United States’ commitment to defending global religious freedom.
