Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel made an emotional comeback on Tuesday night after serving a six-day suspension for controversial remarks about the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kimmel walked onto the stage to thunderous applause and chants of his name from the studio audience. However, the mood quickly shifted when he became emotional, pausing to address the controversy directly.
“I want you to understand that it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” Kimmel said, holding back tears. “I don’t think there’s anything funny about it… I sent love to his family then, and I still mean it now.”
The comedian emphasized that his comments had been misinterpreted and twisted, clarifying that he did not blame any political group for the killing. He stressed that his words were not meant to mock tragedy but had been taken out of context.
Despite his heartfelt apology, controversy continues to shadow his return. Nearly 70 ABC-affiliated stations, including those under Sinclair and Nexstar, refused to air the episode. The stations argued that Kimmel’s earlier comments alienated a portion of their audience, making the show less relevant.
Even with the pushback, Kimmel expressed gratitude to his fans, including those who disagreed with him but still respected his right to free speech. He also revealed that he and his family had received threats over his political jokes, underscoring the intensity of the backlash.
Kimmel ended his monologue with a lighthearted jab at former President Donald Trump, who once mocked his ratings.
“I do tonight,” Kimmel quipped, sparking cheers and laughter from the audience.
The emotional episode marks a pivotal moment for Kimmel, who continues to balance political humor with the sensitivities of an increasingly divided public.
